Discover the link between cholesterol and cancer
North Carolina: Under normal circumstances, the body’s cells (cells) die on their own and are replaced by new cells, but this is not the case with cancer and those cells accumulate in the form of tumors. Research has now shown that the role of cholesterol is also slightly important.
Although the role of increasing cholesterol in breast cancer has been shown before, it was not fully understood. Scientists at the Duke Cancer Institute have now discovered the mechanism of action. They have seen how cholesterol can take breast cancer cells to such a level that they do not go away and continue to grow in the form of tumors. Then such cells begin to reach other parts of the body.
“Many types of cancer cells start to die when they spread to other parts of the body and this process is called metastasis. But some cells do not die on this journey because they save themselves from dying. Cholesterol plays a key role in this process and the most important example is breast cancer, ”said Professor Donald McDonald, a cancer specialist who is also the lead expert in the study.
They have previously looked at the link between estrogen-positive and cholesterol, a type of breast cancer. That is, many types of cancer caused by the hormone estrogen take their fuel from cholesterol. Now they have performed experiments on mice and found that cancer cells that travel from their original locations to other parts of the body use cholesterol.
But here the surviving cancer cells develop another trait in which they do not die from cell stress but continue to spread and cause cancer in other parts of the body. This process has also been seen in breast cancer and skin cancer which are constantly spreading.
Understanding this whole process will pave the way for new treatments and we will be able to better control cancer.
