Diabetic foot wound, treatment not in years now possible in days
About 15% of diabetics suffer from foot injuries. This condition is called diabetic foot ulcer in medical terms. Complete healing of these wounds takes a long time and there is still a risk of re-infection. These wounds also cause amputation in 70% of cases.
However, a team of Indian experts has claimed that the wounds caused by diabetes can be healed in a matter of days through research. Gopal Nath, a professor at the Department of Microbiology, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), India, and his team have adopted an alternative to traditional therapies that include antibiotics. They say that treatment with antibiotics can take years, while the chances of recurrence of the infection are many times higher.
Scientists claim that bacteriophage therapy, which eliminates infections with the help of viruses, is a modern solution to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
The experts tested bacteriophage therapy on such patients and published the results in the National Center for Biotechnology Information at the National Institutes of Health in the United States.
The study selected 20 patients who had been suffering from an unhealthy foot injury due to diabetes for 6 weeks. Using the therapy, it was observed that the wound healed in a few weeks and the injured skin returned to normal.
Another study selected 48 patients whose wounds had not healed in 6 weeks and who were continuing traditional wound healing and care. Immediate effects of bacteriophage therapy were also observed in them and the wound was completely healed.
Research shows that this treatment is effective in both cases, whether diabetic or not. However, diabetic patients need a little longer to heal.
