6.1 magnitude earthquake shakes Iran
Tehran: Five people were killed in an earthquake in southern Iran. The quake was also felt in the United Arab Emirates.
According to Arab media, five people were killed and several others were injured in the earthquake in the southern region of Iran. The quake had a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale. The quake destroyed several homes and damaged roads. 6.3 magnitude aftershocks were also felt in the area.
Iranian emergency officials say rescue teams have begun arriving in the quake-hit areas and relief tents are being set up for the quake victims.
On the other hand, strong tremors were also felt in the United Arab Emirates including Dubai and Sharjah.
According to the European Mediterranean Earthquake Center, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake shook southern Iran at a depth of 10 km. The epicenter was reported below the Iranian port of Langha, 150 kilometers from Sharjah.
